For more than half a century, MADEC has been quietly shaping lives across Mackay through compassionate, community-based support.
As a charitable not-for-profit organisation, their mission is to help people live their best possible lives through meaningful assistance and opportunity, particularly through services delivered under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
Within the compassionate team at MADEC is NDIS Service Manager Edmund McMahon. With oversight over a wide range of services, Edmund leads a team committed to supporting individuals to live with dignity, independence and connection.
MADEC’s programs span several vital areas of support. Through supported independent living, individuals are able to live in their own homes while receiving tailored assistance, often with staff available around the clock.
Community engagement programs ensure people remain connected to everyday life, whether that involves attending appointments, shopping, participating in events or simply enjoying time out in the community.
The organisation also offers respite services for families who need temporary support, as well as short-term accommodation for individuals whose lives may have been suddenly disrupted through illness, accident or hospitalisation.
Edmund says the significance of the work lies in the impact it has on the lives of others.
“Supporting vulnerable individuals to live as fulfilling and complete lives as they possibly can is incredibly powerful.”
He also recognises that each individual brings their own aspirations, interests and ambitions.
“Everyone has their own goals and interests in life. Our role at MADEC is to support people and continue to help them reach those goals.”
The work itself often requires extraordinary levels of care and responsibility. Support workers assist with mobility, medications and daily routines that many people take for granted.
“Sometimes we’re supporting people with medications, mobility, or even helping them eat – we really are there to help them in anyway we can.”
Drawing on the history of MADEC, the organisation was founded in the region more than fifty years ago, and now in 2026, it continues to serve the same community that shaped it.
“MADEC has been part of Mackay for more than half a century. Our roots, our staff and the people we support are all part of this community,” Edmund said.
“We approach support in many ways like a family, while still maintaining professional boundaries.”
Rather than isolating individuals from the wider community, the organisation seeks to ensure they remain an active part of it.
“We deliberately support our clients in ways that allow them to simply live as members of the community… because that’s exactly what they are, and it’s what they deserve.”
As a parent of a child living with a disability, the standard Edmund sets within his work is one that goes beyond the walls of the organisation.
“If I had a family member needing support, I would want them to be somewhere I trust… and so that’s the standard I, and all of us here at MADEC, work toward every day.”
It is this belief that fuels Edmund’s passion for the sector and the team he leads. Disability support, he believes, offers a rare opportunity to build a career defined by purpose.
“If you want a meaningful career where you’re genuinely making a difference in people’s lives, the community services sector is the place to be.”
And when asked to describe himself, Edmund offers three words that capture both his own outlook and the spirit of the organisation he represents.
“Passionate, committed and genuine.”
