A Perfect Blend of Nature, Adventure, and Relaxation
Your adventure begins with a short 20-minute ferry ride from Townsville, with the option to bring your car along for a more leisurely exploration. As the ferry nears the island, you’ll be mesmerised by the lush green hills that beautifully contrast with the island’s iconic turquoise waters. Whether you’re here for a day or a week, Magnetic Island offers an unforgettable escape where nature, adventure, and local charm come together seamlessly. Once you arrive, here are some free and amazing experiences you can enjoy:
Forts Walk
Magnetic Island is a hiker’s paradise, and one of the most popular treks is the famous Forts Walk. Not only does it provide the best opportunity to spot the island’s wild resident koalas, but it also offers an incredible mix of nature and history. Located between Arcadia and Horseshoe Bay, this trail rewards hikers with panoramic 360-degree views, overlooking secluded bays, dense national parks, and the island’s historical sites. With the chance to encounter koalas along the way, combined with breathtaking vistas and peaceful surroundings, the Forts Walk is a truly unforgettable experience.
Picnic Bay Jetty
Make your way to the jetty and soak in the stunning ocean hues, all while keeping an eye out for the array of wildlife that calls this area home, from turtles and dugongs to rays and eagles.
Top Tip: Picnic Bay is also a fantastic spot to watch the sunset.
Meet A Rocky Friend
Magnetic Island is home to a thriving population of Allied Rock Wallabies, perfect for a cheeky selfie or two. For the best chance to spot them, head to the far end of Geoffrey Bay, turn onto the old Arcadia Jetty Road (just across from Arcadia Village), and keep an eye out during the early morning or late afternoon when they're often feeding.
Or if you head to the helicopter pad at Nelly Bay for sunset, where you will see many rock wallabies coming out of the bushes – you might even spot some babies!
Geoffrey Bay
For underwater enthusiasts, Geoffrey Bay is a must-visit spot on the island. Just a short swim from the shore, you'll encounter vibrant marine life, from turtles and tropical fish to the possibility of spotting a gentle dugong. The crystal-clear waters make it a snorkeller’s dream, and if you're lucky, you might even witness a majestic manta ray gliding by.
Beach Please!
On the hunt for hidden beaches? Maggie has plenty to offer! Arthur Bay, Florence Bay, Radical Bay, and Rocky Bay are all top spots. Arthur and Rocky are the easiest to access, but if you're up for a little adventure, Florence and Radical are absolutely worth the effort. If you're doing the Forts Walk, take the Wumbu Track towards Horseshoe Bay and you'll pass by Radical Bay (and why not reward yourself with a gelato after the hike?).
Oh Maggie, when can we come back!
