Throughout history, intrepid women have defied societal norms and embarked on extraordinary journeys, charting unknown territories and inspiring future generations to pursue their own adventures. Here are seven remarkable female explorers whose daring escapades continue to ignite the wanderlust in all of us.
Jeanne Baret: The Disguised Circumnavigator
In the 18th century, when maritime expeditions were exclusively male domains, Jeanne Baret broke the mould by becoming the first woman to circumnavigate the globe. Born in 1740 in Burgundy, France, Baret was a skilled botanist who partnered with naturalist Philibert Commerson. To join Commerson on a global expedition in 1766, she disguised herself as a man, adopting the alias "Jean" and binding her chest to conceal her identity. Despite the gruelling conditions and the constant threat of discovery, Baret's expertise led to the identification of numerous plant species, including the Bougainvillea. Her remarkable journey, fraught with peril and intrigue, paved the way for women in exploration.
Isabella Bird: The Victorian Solo Sojourner
Isabella Bird, born in 1831 in Yorkshire, England, was a Victorian-era traveller whose insatiable curiosity led her to some of the world's most remote regions. Despite chronic health issues, Bird's adventures began with a voyage to North America, where she explored the Rocky Mountains on horseback. Her travels took her to Hawaii, Japan, China, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Kurdistan, Turkey, and Morocco, documenting her experiences in vivid detail. Bird's intrepid spirit and eloquent writings not only captivated readers but also challenged the conventional expectations of women in her time, inspiring them to seek their own paths of discovery.
Nellie Bly: The Pioneering Globe-Trotter
American journalist Nellie Bly, born Elizabeth Cochran Seaman in 1864, was renowned for her investigative reporting and audacious spirit. In 1889, inspired by Jules Verne's novel "Around the World in Eighty Days," Bly set out to turn fiction into reality. She embarked on a solo journey, traversing continents and oceans with remarkable speed. Bly completed her whirlwind trip in just 72 days, setting a world record and demonstrating that women could be ambitious and intrepid travellers. Her fearless pursuit of adventure and truth continues to inspire journalists and explorers alike.
Amelia Earhart: The Trailblazing Aviatrix
Born in 1897 in Kansas, USA, Amelia Earhart's fascination with flight led her to become one of history's most celebrated aviators. In 1928, she became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean as a passenger, and in 1932, she piloted a solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic, a daring feat that cemented her legacy. Earhart's adventurous spirit and numerous aviation records challenged societal norms and opened the skies for future generations of female pilots. Her mysterious disappearance in 1937 during an attempt to circumnavigate the globe remains one of history's enduring mysteries, but her legacy as a pioneer in aviation continues to inspire.
Robyn Davidson: The Camel Trekker of the Outback
Australian adventurer Robyn Davidson, born in 1950, is best known for her remarkable solo journey across the harsh terrains of the Australian Outback. In 1977, accompanied by four camels and her loyal dog, Davidson trekked 2,700 kilometres from Alice Springs to the west coast of Australia. Her nine-month odyssey through the desert was a test of endurance and resilience, capturing the world's imagination. Davidson's memoir, "Tracks," recounts her profound connection with the land and the challenges she faced, inspiring many to embrace the unknown and embark on their own adventures.
Helen Thayer: The Polar Pioneer
New Zealand-born explorer Helen Thayer, born in 1937, has made a career of defying the odds. At the age of 50, Thayer became the first woman to trek solo to the Magnetic North Pole, enduring extreme temperatures and unpredictable ice conditions. Her adventurous pursuits didn't stop there; she has walked across the Sahara Desert, lived among wolves in the Arctic, and kayaked in the Amazon. Thayer's relentless pursuit of exploration and her ability to overcome physical and mental challenges serve as a testament to the power of determination and courage, inspiring adventurers worldwide to push beyond their limits.
Jessica Watson: The Teen Who Sailed Into History
At just 16 years old, Australian sailor Jessica Watson defied expectations, weathered towering waves, and navigated some of the most treacherous waters on Earth—all alone. In 2009, she set off from Sydney in her 10-metre yacht, Ella’s Pink Lady, aiming to become the youngest person to sail solo, non-stop, and unassisted around the world.
For 210 days, Watson battled relentless storms, endured weeks of solitude, and crossed the world’s most notorious sailing passages, including Cape Horn and the Southern Ocean. The journey tested her resilience, but she emerged stronger with each passing wave. When she finally returned to Sydney in May 2010, she was met with a hero’s welcome—proof that courage isn’t measured in years.
Since her record-breaking voyage, Watson has continued to inspire adventurers through her best-selling book, True Spirit, and a Netflix film adaptation of her journey. Her story reminds us all that the biggest adventures begin with a leap of faith—and sometimes, a gust of wind in the right direction.
These trailblazing women navigated uncharted territories, both geographically and socially. Their stories beckon to the adventurous spirit within us all, encouraging us to embark on our own journeys and discover the vast possibilities that await beyond the horizon.
Where will you be ‘Tripping’ to next?
What began as a typical English backpacker’s journey from Cairns to Airlie Beach sparked a lifelong love of sailing, discovery, and adventure for photojournalist, Sharon Smallwood.
Sharon's journey began in 1997 on a Greyhound bus across Australia's East Coast. Equipped with insights from her Lonely Planet and Rough Guide, she planned her route and headed to the Whitsundays, known for its exceptional sailing.
Once in town, Sharon wandered the streets surveying the typical backpacker sailing trips but was quickly swayed by a man who invited her and her friends to join him on his timeshare yacht. Initially cautious, Sharon was up for the challenge, unaware that this chance encounter would change her life.
After sailing around the Whitsunday islands, Sharon was offered the opportunity to venture further afield to Great Keppel Island and back. “We quickly went from having never been on a boat before to suddenly being offshore on the Queensland coast doing our first night passage,” she said.
“None of us knew what we were doing – it was a case of the blind leading the blind and I'd say we pretty much limped home, but there must have been a lot more positively memorable things about that trip than there were bad, because that was the beginning of what has been a lifelong passion,” Sharon shared.
Fast forward to 2025, and Sharon now owns a boat with her husband, whom she met in Sydney. At the time, Sharon was well established in her film and television career, working on projects like 'Star Wars', The Matrix and Superman Returns at Fox Studios, while also juggling a three-month trip to Thailand for the CBS show ‘Survivor’. It was during that overseas trip that her husband Julian decide to alleviate his loneliness by buying a boat —a Compass 29 named 'Orion,' though it was often playfully called 'the Onion’ after a friend mistook the ‘r’ for an ‘n’ on the bow lettering.
“Note to other women out there if you leave your significant other for any amount of time, you may come back to a boat!” Sharon joked.
‘The Onion,’ was mainly sailed around Sydney Harbour, until in a burst of spontaneity typical of the pair, they decided to voyage to the Great Barrier Reef and back. “It was a fantastic trip, and we always used to say that if we could afford nothing else, we'd go around the world on that boat,” Sharon said.
Despite their love for the 'Onion,' the couple eventually upgraded to a larger boat, 'Brilliant II,' which they still own. Discovering it for sale in Thailand, they visited, fell in love all over again, and bought it from the previous owner. On returning to Australia, they packed up their lives in Sydney, shipped a few essentials, and spent a year sailing the boat back.
After this adventure, Sharon and Julian quickly realised city life wasn’t for them. Initial plans to turn around and sail back to Asia changed though when Sharon became pregnant, which led them to settle in the Whitsundays.
Sharon had already begun working as a photojournalist alongside her film and television career, before moving into mainstream journalism. After leaving the two Whitsunday newspapers she had edited, she launched her own company in 2017, offering media direction, consultancy, freelance journalism, and PR. Her adventurous life has now led to her latest project: The Whitsunday People Podcast. "I’d been chatting with my colleague, Phil Gordon, from Riptide Creative for about a year about starting one but with everything on my plate—renovating our boat (while still sailing it), documenting it on YouTube, working, and raising my son—I didn’t think I had room for one more thing. But here I am and the Whitsunday People Podcast launches today!" she said.
Alongside her recent venture into podcasting, Sharon has also photographed the covers of the last two editions of 100 Magic Miles, which is renowned as the boating bible for the Whitsunday area.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to be a part of something that I hold in such high regard and feel honoured to have been given the opportunity, initially by the founders David and Carolyn Colfelt, and now their son and daughter-in-law Anthony and Emma,” she said.
To keep up with Sharon's various exploits you can follow her on Instagram at @shazatsea, on YouTube at 'The Sailing Adventures of Brilliant II' (@BrilliantSailing), or by subscribing to the Whitsunday People Podcast on YouTube and Spotify.
What are your favourite spots in the Whitsundays and what hidden gems have you come across?
“It never ceases to amaze me that it doesn't matter how long I've been sailing these waters for, I can still go out to the islands and discover new spots.”
In terms of favorite spots, Blue Pearl Bay on Hayman Island is one of my favorites.”
“I also absolutely love South Molle island. It's got just the best walks ever!”
“And you can't beat Whitehaven and Chalkie’s for that beautiful, pure white silica sand.”

By Hannah McNamara
Newly wed and ready to indulge in the luxurious Hayman Island retreat, my husband Adam and I boarded a spacious boat that whisked us away to the resort in just under an hour. As the sun began to set, its golden rays glistened on the ocean’s surface, and the smooth ride ensured our experience on the water was as comfortable as it was serene. Even the boat was a slice of luxury… we couldn’t wait to see what Intercontinental Hayman Great Barrier Reef had in store for us!
Arriving in style, we stepped off the boat onto the dock, greeted by the sun setting behind majestic palm trees. The panoramic views of lush mountains surrounded by nature were simply breathtaking.
We hopped onto a buggy with our luggage and were driven to the lobby, where we were surprised to see Proserpine rock-wallabies hopping around just a few meters away. The harmony between nature and stunning infrastructure was truly awe-inspiring. The lobby itself was a spacious open area that blended a modern reception with a cozy chill-out zone, complete with comfy seating, board games, and even a giant Connect Four!
As we made our way to our room, we continued to be impressed by the resort’s seamless blend of nature and architecture – a perfect combination of true luxury.
Opening the door to our room left us speechless. The spacious living area, poolside views, a gorgeous bedroom with two walk-in robes, and an ambient bathroom design made us feel like we had stepped into paradise. As a thoughtful touch, we were gifted two stylish thermos water bottles and a chic Hayman bag – both of which we still use to this day!
With an array of delicious dining options, we enjoyed a delightful dining experience at Amici. This Mediterranean-inspired restaurant, surrounded by lush greenery and eclectic interiors, offered everything from tapas and wood-fired pizzas to generous handmade pastas and an impressive selection of Australian wines. I opted for the local seafood linguine, while Adam chose the slow-cooked beef ragu pappardelle. It was paradise on a plate, and the portions were just perfect.
The next morning, we continued our exploration of the island and I treated myself to an iced coffee at The Grove Boutique & Café. Adam and I shared a chocolate brownie, which was absolutely delicious. The Grove also offered a selection of luxury retail brands, souvenirs, and holiday essentials, plus a range of grab-and-go options, including fresh sandwiches, donuts, muffins, and small cheeseboards - practically everything at your fingertips!
With my camera in hand, we explored more of the island, and I was amazed by the picturesque sights at every turn, including a giant whale (not real, of course) by the beach. The sand was soft and white, and the water was a pristine blue. We were especially drawn to the Asian cuisine at Bam Bam.
Bam Bam exudes personality with its bold, energetic vibe and Pan-Asian dishes with an Australian twist. Located by the Infinity Pool, Bam Bam serves up zesty flavours like wok-tossed noodles and sugarcane juices. We shared a crispy fish rice bowl and a Thai beef salad – both bursting with flavours that left us longing for more, and I even got to try my first-ever coconut… so refreshing!
Although our stay was brief, the memories we created will last a lifetime. The relaxation, joy, and time spent with my husband at Intercontinental Hayman Great Barrier Reef are moments I’ll forever treasure. I often find myself dreaming of those peaceful days before we returned to reality.
