Crystal clear waters, a pristine cove. Gentle waves lapping soft white sands. A border of smooth stone rocks, a verdant tropical rainforest laying gently behind.
This morning I woke up at dawn and could hear the children talking quietly through the papery walls of our tents. I stretched out the crinkles in my body, reached for a light jumper and nudged my husband.
“Come on!” I said, “Let’s take the kids to the beach!”
Unzipping the tent, my feet touched the soft sandy floor of our campsite, the children were already out of their tents, and we beckoned them forward, forming a procession of early morning bodies trailing down the soft sandy path and out onto the expanse of beach beyond.
It was just us. No-one else was here. It was completely silent, save the gentle call of some birds hiding in the rainforest behind. The beach was delicate shade of dawn, not yet touched by sun, and its beauty caused us to stop and marvel.
Like naughty teenagers sneaking to a place we shouldn’t be, we ran across the empty beach with delight, paddling through the shallows, laughing and skipping along.
“Shhh!” said my husband. “Look here! There’s a stingray!”
We gathered around and watched the stingray glide beside us for several minutes. At that moment, we felt free, at one with nature. There was no technology, no distraction, just us together as a family.
It was hard to believe that just yesterday our little family had been dropped off on this remote beach with an esky full of food, camping essentials and the excitement of an island camping adventure ahead. As the barge departed and we were left alone at the remote Chance Bay, we knew this would be an experience we would treasure forever.
Scamper, Whitsunday Islands Camping, had kindly equipped us with all the necessary items - from tents to sleeping bags, cooking utensils to storage boxes, snorkels and stinger suits. The Chance Bay campsite was located a short distance from the beach and offered sea views from its flat campgrounds. As soon as we’d set up camp, we set off along one of the national park trails, trekking through the lush rainforest before popping out on the other side of the island, on the magnificent Whitehaven Beach.
Here we played in the shallows and joined the other visiting tourists admiring a passing sea turtle.
As we ventured back into the bush, we felt happy to be returning to our quiet little bay which we had all to ourselves. That afternoon we snorkelled across the coral reef, the children squealing with delight every time they saw a fish. We also had two kayaks, thanks to Salty Dog Sea Kayaks, and enjoyed paddling over the reef and exploring nearby bays.
That night we ate our BBQ dinner at sunset, played outside with some sparklers and glowsticks which entertained the children while we sat back and watched.
An experience with Scamper, Whitsunday Islands Camping is one that you will treasure forever. The company can drop you off at more than a dozen stunning island destinations, so you can take your pick, choose your own special location where memories are made and return plans are always on the horizon.

Ever wanted a bird's-eye view of the spectacular Airlie Beach without boarding a plane? The Honeyeater Trail has youcovered.
In July, my friends and I attempted the well-loved Honeyeater Trail. After trying not to be put off by the whispersabout snakes and steep inclines, we decided to find out ourselves what this popular hike had to offer.
The walk begins at Kara Crescent, easily reachable by car or a pleasant 15–20-minute stroll from Airlie Beach’s MainStreet. We chose to drive to the trailhead.
We started our hike at Kara Crescent around11am, which turned out to be a mistake. By midday, the sun was blazing, and wewere sweltering, despite it being winter. Head out early to avoid the heat or consider a sunrise hike with a head torch for the dark ascent.
The trail starts with a steep incline up a flight of stairs and continues uphill for most of the way, easing off in thefinal 1.8km where the path levels out, making it less strenuous.
The walk up, which is about 4.1km to reach the lookout, took us about an hour, with us walking at a steady pace, and thefull roundtrip will take you around 8.2km through the lush green rainforest of the Conway National Park. This also offers you the chance to see all theexceptional wildlife The Whitsundays has to offer.
During our journey, we were serenaded by the enchanting calls ofCockatoos and Kookaburras.
While the trail was upgraded for all weatherin 2021, wearing sensible footwear is essential. Although most of the path isgravel, there were some parts that were particularly muddy.
The views along the walk up are limited, however, what we saw when we arrived at the top, was more than worth the wait. The panoramic views stretched across most of Airlie Beach. The turquoise watersof the UNESCO-listed Great Barrier Reef resembled a picture postcard, glistening under the sun against the flourishing greenery of the bushlands. Youcould even spot some of the islands out in the horizon. Undoubtedly, this wasthe most breathtaking view I've encountered in Airlie Beach.
After capturing our well-deserved pictures atthe top and witnessing a man sadly lose his drone to a tree, we began ourdescent.
What goes up, must come down, and the wayback seemed marginally easier than our gradual ascent.
Despite not being lucky enough (or unlucky insome people’s eyes) to spot any snakes on our journey, we did come across aGoanna which was frantically climbing a tree trying to get out of our path. Itwas lovely to stop and watch it as it gradually blended into the trunk.
There are a few things to note if you plan totrek the Honeyeater Trail. Firstly, before attempting the ascent make sure youhave lots of water and food with you, it's a 2-hour hike and you will getpeckish!
Another important point to consider is towear light clothing or sportswear. We felt quite hot even in winter, so thesummer months are likely to be even more uncomfortable.
Thirdly, make sure you bring sunscreen, although the path is mainly shaded by the trees, the viewpoint is very much inthe sun.
Lastly, enjoy yourself. This is one of thebest views I have seen in Airlie Beach, and it really is worth it. My friends and I had a great time, sharedlots of laughs and were all stunned when we reached the top. If you are inAirlie on holiday, or a local looking for a new hike, make sure the HoneyeaterTrail is top of your list.

Originally from the Sunshine Coast, Celeste moved to Airlie Beach two years ago and has not looked back since.
Celeste works for Ocean Rafting, however when she first moved here she worked as a bartender and barista, but it was her best friend and partner who inspired her to follow her passion to join the boating industry.
“They would come home every day saying how amazing their day was, and after about a year of that I thought I’ve got to do this too! So I did, and it was the best decision,” exclaimed Celeste.
Currently working as an Eco Host and Deckhand, Celeste loves taking guests out to the reef for snorkelling, up to the Hill Inlet Lookout, onto the silica sands of Whitehaven Beach and weaving through the Whitsunday Islands on the fast yellow boats. She describes the trip as “epic” and enjoys talking to people from all over the world.
When she isn’t jetting around the Whitsundays and hosting memorable tours for guests, Celeste can be found working in the Ocean Rafting office in Airlie Beach. She loves sharing her adventures with others, whether that’s on a tour, on the land, or in the pages of this magazine.

Jade has been with SeaLink Whitsundays since November 2022 and loves working for the company and within the tourism industry as a whole.
She began working in the tourism sector in 2014 as a reservations consultant, but it wasn’t truly where her heart belonged. In 2015 she asked her boss for an opportunity to work on the water and has been living the dream ever since.
Her favourite part about working in the industry is seeing the guests’ emotions and excitement as Jade and the SeaLink crew showcase the beautiful Whitsunday Islands.
“That’s what keeps me in the industry. Being a part of the experiences that bring these people pure joy,” Jade shared.
Jade also expressed that some people spend their whole lives saving for a trip to experience the Whitsunday Islands and, knowing how special this moment is to them, makes her role even more meaningful. She says it’s always a “feel-good moment” to see the joy in their faces.
Originally from Sydney, Jade grew up in a small town near Cronulla. But after 10 years in the Whitsundays, the region now feels like home.
When it comes to family and friends she is blessed with the best and she loves spending quality time with them. With a Master 5, a Med 2, and a qualification as a dive master she is highly experienced in her role.
She loves being able to share her passion for the water with others, especially exploring new snorkel or dive locations, or simply marvelling at the beauty of the natural surrounds.

Adjacent to this pool is a shaded lounge area, offering a tranquil retreat for reading or relaxing in Queensland’s glorious sunshine. Some of the pools stand out with their unique themes, such as a Doctor Who-inspired pool that features a whimsical Tardis-themed restroom. This creative touch offers a delightful experience for children and families.
Toscana, built in 1999 by the same developer behind the other hotels and resorts on the street, has maintained its original Tuscan theme that the designer intended.
Josephine Matthews and David Cummings acquired the management rights for Toscana in 2007, after relocating from Cairns. The pair chose to return to Airlie Beach, where they had previously worked on Hook Island in the early 1980s. Josephine and David have been in the hotel industry for over 30 years, and have great knowledge about the industry, and, will make sure your stay in The Whitsundays is a memorable one.
In Toscana, Josephine stated that their apartments are “like your own home,” so you do not have to worry about housekeeping disruptions unless you request it!
Toscana boasts a really homely but luxurious atmosphere, making it the perfect home away from home, in one of the most spectacular locations Australia has to offer.
Stone cobbled stairs lead to the quaint reception area, where you'll discover a variety of brochures for tours, all available for direct booking. As you browse through your options, you'll be greeted with a warm welcome from Josephine or David, before being shown to your apartment.
So, what are you waiting for? Grab your friends and family and head on down to the Italy of Australia, while you enjoy a much-needed break in a stunning location, away from the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life.
“Get your friends and family to visit Toscana and Airlie Beach,” Josephine emphasised.
