Beautiful Bowen is located at the top of the Whitsundays, and did you know it is a paradise for dog owners?
Before you even enter Bowen and are greeted by the beautiful paradise that awaits, you will see the first of many pet friendly spots in town. At Bowen Visitor Information Centre, next to the big mango, there is a pet area for dogs to run around in. Perfect for pets that may have been in a car for a while. While your dogs are running around, visit the Big Mango, and the friendly volunteers at the Bowen Visitor Information Centre.
Bowen is home to many stunning beaches, and your pups can enjoy them too. Almost every beach in Bowen is dog friendly. You and your dogs can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the sands. For the hyper-active pups out there, Bowen has some off-leash areas for you. Queens Beach, Doughty Creek Mouth, Kings Beach, and Grays Bay are all off-leash areas; perfect for your furry friend to let loose and explore with immense freedom.
For park and nature lovers, Denison Park is a 24-hour off-leash park that offers a peaceful ambience and a great range of walking trails, perfect for indulging yourself in nature. Denison Park is also close to Bowen Foreshore, Flagstaff Hill Lookout, and Kings Beach.
With all this exploration, your furry companion may be getting thirsty by now. Luckily for you many cafés in Bowen are welcoming to your little friend, often placing dog bowls out for thirsty travellers.

Bowen Water Park
Located at Front Beach, Bowen Water Park is a free to use water park and is open all year round. It is safe and equipped with two water slides and a huge water bucket that spills down a huge amount of water, perfect for those hot days. Bird’s Fish Bar is a family-owned business that offers the perfect family lunch or dinner. They supply Bowen families and visitors with fresh seafood that is caught locally, and it can be enjoyed in their outdoor dining area that overlooks the marina.

Horseshoe Bay
This beach is a locals family favourite and for good reason. Horseshoe Bay is one of the
few places along the Great Barrier Reef where you can snorkel right from the beach.
Snorkelling is always a great family activity, offering little ones the opportunity to explore colourful corals and abundant marine life straight from the beach. Adding to the unique experience, try and spot the underwater sculpture, the Bywa. While you are there, make sure you call into Horse Shoe Bay Café for some refreshments.
The lookout walk is also a great family exercise and at the top of the lookout you can
look down at Horseshoe Bay, where you have just been snorkelling.
Surrounding Horseshoe Bay are some great rocks too, which are popular climbing spots
with kids.
Bowen Summergarden Cinema
For families seeking some shade and to escape the hot sun for a few blissfully cool hours, there is nowhere better than Queensland’s oldest cinema, Bowen Summergarden Cinema.
This cinema has character and charm and provides families, both visitors and locals alike, with an old school unique cinema experience that is unrivalled.
The Big Mango
A trip to Bowen is incomplete without a stop to The Big Mango, and it is hard to miss.
Before entering Bowen, a large 10-metre-high Bowen Mango towers over everything else in sight.
Australia’s known for its ‘Big’ things which are conveniently located to break up big drives. The Big Mango in Bowen can be found adjacent to the Bowen Visitor Information Centre, when you’re there you can chat to the great volunteers and they can help you create a Bowen family-friendly itinerary. Movie lovers? Head down Bowen Summergarden Cinema. It is a beautiful old cinema that has been operating in Bowen since 1948. For film geeks or people seeking a relaxing afternoon out of the sun Bowen Summergarden Cinema is the perfect spot to watch all the newest releases in this gorgeous old-fashioned cinema.
Meanwhile, Mullers Lagoon offers a scenic walk around the lagoon with plenty of picnic spots at hand. There are also lots of little freshwater turtles in the lagoon that like to come and say hi.
Bowen is also home to beautiful murals. Scattered down Bowen’s main street wonderful murals about Bowen’s history are on view, ending at Bowen’s foreshore for Bowen’s newest mural.
For history buffs, nothing can top Bowen’s Historical Society & Museum. Full of information on Bowen’s Lighthouse, the iconic jetty, and Aboriginal culture.
On The Coast
Along Bowen’s coastline are fabulous, picturesque destinations that have you covered from breakfast to dinner.
Begin the day at Flagstaff Hill Lookout, a magical lookout gives you an entire view over Bowen and the whole area. You can look out all the way back to the Whitsunday Islands, Bowen’s Lighthouse, Cape Gloucester, Bowen’s Kings Beach and also Abbot Point. Why not pack a picnic and sit atop this scenic spot for a relaxing lunch with a view?
Down the hill and back to Bowen’s foreshore is where you can explore Bowen Jetty. Bowen Jetty was the first established port in North Queensland when Bowen was recognised as an excellent natural harbour due to its sheltered location. To function effectively as a port Bowen Jetty had to be long, to stretch past the mud flats and shallow waters. In 1865 Bowen Jetty was constructed and in the following years has seen numerous renovations and extensions. It is now a tourist destination in its own right and open for long leisurely walks or a spot of fishing.
A trip to Bowen would not be complete without trying some delicious fresh seafood, and Birds Fish Bar serves exceptional cooked seafood. Meanwhile Arabon Seafoods offers fresh cold treats, perfect for the barbeque or to eat chilled. You can enjoy the fresh seafood, freshly cooked to order whilst overlooking the harbour. Complete your day in beautiful Bowen at the award-winning beach at Horseshoe Bay. For the adventurous at Horseshoe Bay there are two different walking trails. And for those that love snorkelling, this is the beach for you. There is an underwater sculpture called the ‘Bywa’ and it is a part of the coral restoration project. This man-made sculpture is a spectacular sight in the water and acts as eco-friendly coral nursery. Horseshoe Bay is also the last beach in Queensland that you can watch the sunset at, making it an ideal place to end your busy day.

Indulge in the classic cinema feel of yesteryear the Summergarden Theatre. Built in 1948, this vintage cinema combines modern films with classic charm. Located in the quaint beachside village of Queens Beach, it's an intimate setting where you might just have the whole theatre to yourself. Enjoying a blockbuster in this unique venue is an experience worth venturing out of Bowen's town centre for.

No need to worry about the stingers. As stinger season runs from October – May the ocean is mostly clear of Irukandji and the infamous Box Jellyfish.

Horseshoe Bay
This cosy bay is regularly at the top of the ‘best beaches’ list and that’s no surprise. The white sand and crystal-clear water make it one of Bowen’s favourites. A spectacular coral reef awaits you just meters offshore and Bowen is one of the few places on the Queensland coast where you can snorkel right off the beach. The special underwater Bywa structure is also located just off Horseshoe Bay. The Bywa was installed in 2019 as part of the Whitsunday Reef Recovery Art Project and it is a delight for snorkellers.
Grays Bay
One of the most picturesque bays in Queensland and a beautiful spot for sunsets. Grays Bay offers great access to the water with its boat ramp. It is also a great spot for families with free barbecues and a shady playground area at the nearby Lion’s Park.
For the more adventurous, the water at Grays Bay is perfect for some jet-skiing or other water sports like stand-up paddle boarding.
Kings Beach
An ideal spot to take the dog, Kings Beach allows dogs off leash all the time. It’s beautiful and undeveloped but that often means you can the place to yourself, it’s the perfect beach to hang out with a friend.
Murray Bay
With access to the beach down a narrow track, the anticipation lives up to what awaits you. Once there the lookout is incredible, and the coconut trees make it feel like a tropical paradise. Murray Bay is a favourite for photographers, snorkellers, divers and fishers. You’ll love it too.
Queens Beach
At five kilometres long, Queens Beach is Bowen’s longest beach. It stretches from ‘The Pocket’ on Horseshoe Bay Road to Yasso Point and the Don River mouth. Along the beach there are several parks with free barbecues, large playgrounds, and Sunday markets. The sandy shore offers a great spot for various activities such as beachcombing, fishing or just walking and enjoying the sunset. If the stunning view doesn’t motivate you for exercise, then maybe the kilometres of walking and bicycle tracks will or maybe the free exercise equipment.
Front Beach
Located at the foreshore, this beach is the ideal pull up area for travellers, day-trippers, locals and visiting families. The foreshore area includes a community soundshell event space, Catalina Memorial and information kiosk. The area is completed with a replica of the Big Mango. Take a walk along Bowen’s historic jetty and catch a fish or spot a green sea turtle.
Rose Bay
This award-winning beach offers lovely views of Gloucester Island and of Mother Beddock. Away from city centre this gorgeous beach offers serenity, charm and colourful coral. This beach is great for snorkelling. Attached to the beach is also free barbecues, tables and a playground, making it a great place for families.
Coral Bay
Secluded and hidden away between Horseshoe Bay and Grays Bay, this beach is Bowen’s clothing-optional beach. Follow the bush track for access to this beach or ask a local.
